Psa 1:1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. (2) But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.(3) And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
People often ask “How can I grow spiritual?” As the title of my blog states, this life is a journey. Our citizenship is in the eternal not the temporal (Philippians 3:20). This world is not getting better but worse and were told to work out our salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12). We must, above everything else, preserve and protect our relationship with the Lord Jesus . So the question is “How do I do that?”
First get a good translation of the Bible. Some are literal word for word translations from ancient texts and some are paraphrased thought for thought. I personally use the New American Standard Version and the New King James due to the accuracy of the translation. Now don’t misunderstand, the most important thing is that you understand what you are reading. Get a translation you can understand. Stay in the Word, study the Word and pray for revelation by the Holy Spirit.
Secondly, find a true Bible believing church, one that believes in the inerrancy of God’s word. Find a church that will not compromise the foundational doctrines of the Bible. There are many denominations in the area and some have kinda, sorta, maybe changed the Word to fit their idea of what is right and wrong, They must believe in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ and the atonement of sin by His precious blood shed on Calvary. They must understand there is no grey areas in the word, no fudging, no liberal interpretation. God said it and that settles it whether I like it or not.
Thirdly, Pray! If you have never learned how to pray start practicing today. Talk to the Father just as you would any friend. Get yourself a small notebook and write down the things you want to bring before the throne. Pray for family, friends, church and anything else that’s important to you. Psalms 122:6 says to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. As time goes on you will begin to establish a prayer life that is pleasing to God. 1 Thessalonians 5:16 tells us to pray without ceasing. This means to stay in an attitude and in communication with God.
Finally, Paul tells us 2Ti 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. To grow we must eat. When we don’t eat we begin to weaken and when we become weak we are easy prey for Satan. Find a Bible study group and surround yourself with other believers whom are more mature so you can glean spiritual insight and become stronger.
When you first received Christ as Lord and savior the process of sanctification began. This means you were initially set apart for the Lord’s service. That was just the beginning. As the children’s song states “He’s still working on me to make me what I ought to be.” Paul tells us in Philipians1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. In other words your sanctification process will stop until we step into eternity.
Some would say the moment we are born we are destined to die. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15 and 1 Thessalonians 4 that we who are alive at the return of Christ will be taken to be with Him in glory and should the grave call us, we to be immediately in the presence of the Lord, “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Remember, Life is a Journey and as with any journey there is a final destination. We are closer now than we have ever been in history. “Lift up your head for your redemption draweth nigh.
