Psa_33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.
Memorial Day, 27 May 24, is the day set aside to remember those who have given their lives in order that we may be free. In the Gospel of John chapter 15:13 “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
Memorial Day started as a day set aside to remember the union soldiers who had fallen in the Civil War. Historically it was freed former slaves who decorated the graves of fallen soldiers in Charleston SC. It would later be nationally recognized on 5 May 1868. It would not become an official federal holiday until 1967 and would be designated as the 4th Monday in May.
From the Revolutionary War through present time almost 1.2 million soldiers have given their lives so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have today. Unfortunately, our moral compass is broken and now we call that which is wrong right and that which is right wrong. Our laws have changed to protect and promote evil under the label of freedom and liberty.
The Word of God states that where there is no vision the people perish or cast-off restraint. The Word also says in II Chr 7:14 “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”
Today we have approximately 1.4 million active duty soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines serving around the world protecting our freedoms. There are over 100 memorials on the National Mall in Washington D.C. One of the more famous is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier which holds the remains of unknown soldiers from WWI, WWII, Korea and Viet Nam. The remains of the Viet Nam Viet were properly identified through DNA testing and removed.
The Inscription on the Tomb reads:
HERE RESTS IN HONORED GLORY
AN AMERICAN SOLDIER
KNOWN BUT TO GOD
This week as we honor and remember our fallen, let us remember to pray for this country. Pray that our morals, ethics and values will be restored. The book of Judges tells how Israel went through cycles of sin, repentance, and restoration because everyone did what was right in the own eyes.
Psa 95:6 O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker. (7)For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Today if ye will hear his voice,
Jer 29:13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
Jer 33:3 Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.
Memorial Day is not the start of summer and it is not national party day. It is a time when we reflect and remember the sacrifices of those who laid down their lives. It is a time to give thanks to God above for all our benefits. I am asking everyone to stop each day next week and say a simple prayer:
Thank you Lord for those who have fallen
Strengthen those who have lost love ones
Thank you for our liberty and freedoms
